Waterloo Math Contest (1/3/17)

THE WATERLOO MATH CONTEST - MARCH 1, 2017

PASCAL (GRADE 9), CAYLEY (GRADE 10), FERMAT (GRADE 11)

 Dear Teachers

The Canadian International School is again hosting the series of University of Waterloo Math Contests. As you can see, we have many Waterloo Contests in a school year. So what are the differences?

The University of Waterloo claims to have the largest concentration of mathematical and computer science talent in the world. In order to be eligible for a scholarship to the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, a student must write the Grade 12 Euclid Mathematics Contest. All of the other contests recognize the top achievers with certificates and medals, but are practice sessions for the contest that really matters, the Euclid Contest.

“ If you're not an Ontario high school student, you're particularly encouraged to write the Euclid Contest to demonstrate that you have sufficient mathematical background to enter UW programs.” - Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing

The next set of Math Contests that CISS will host are the Grade 9 Pascal, Grade 10 Cayley and Grade 11 Fermat Contests. Motivated students in lower grades are also encouraged to write these contests. The contests are 60 minutes long, with 25 multiple-choice questions. Calculators are permitted.  Early contest questions require only concepts found in the curriculum; the last few questions are designed to test ingenuity and insight.  Rather than testing content, most of the contest problems test logical thinking and mathematical problem solving.

Past contests, solutions, more information and available online resources for all contests and many curricular topics are available at https://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/index.html. We welcome your participation!
