CIS Leadership Camp 2017

CIS Leadership Camp 2017

Months of planning and organizing came to fruition on Friday, August 4th at 7:00 am as 38 student leaders and their 6 teacher advisors boarded buses at CIS bound for Madagui Sports Resort. This Leadership Camp was the first of its kind at CIS and was sponsored by the the CISS Board of Directors. Assisting me with the planning, organizing, and facilitation of the Camp itself were Hong Anh Diep (Grade 11) and Than Duc Minh Quan (IB2).

The 3-day / 2-night Camp brought together student leaders and their teacher advisors from the 5 Councils that we presently have at CIS: Athletic, GIN, House, Intermediate and Senior Students’ Council. The 38 student leaders were selected from their peers to attend this Leadership Camp because of the level of commitment and passion that they have shown towards student leadership over the course of their CIS careers. They have been role models for their peers and have played prominent roles in leading and making our CIS community a better place. This initiative was a way for the CISS Leadership Team and Board of Directors to acknowledge our student leaders’ never-ending efforts by hosting a camp where like-minded leaders could gather together and plan to make an even bigger impact on school life during the 2017-18 school year.

At CIS we work hard, but we play hard too! This Leadership Camp brought together the best of both of those worlds as each day featured a workshop where students had the opportunity to work both in their respective Councils, but also have the opportunity to cross Council lines and forge bonds with the other Councils as they worked collaboratively on different tasks and shared their thoughts and ideas with one another. Finally, together they had a chance to shape the 2017 - 2018 school year calendar and many joint-council events came about from that shared planning time as well as the framework for the upcoming September CIS Junior Leadership Camp! When the work was finished each day it was play time as the students had the opportunity to take part in team building activities such as paintballing, kayaking, and a scavenger hunt as well as testing their personal limits by rock climbing and ziplining!

Going into the weekend no one truly knew what to expect as we had never done anything like this before, but the goals were to create opportunities for student leaders to share their experiences, learn from each other, and be inspired. In the end the weekend was that and so much more as the students were all in from “the get go” and they really let their passion for CIS shine through in everything they did. The bonds forged this weekend are the bonds that will ultimately create a stronger CIS community and make this year what it is because at the heart of good leadership it is great relationships that drive us to incredible heights and inspire others to follow in our footsteps.
