IB CAS Retreat 2018: Going beyond the classroom

In September, 2018, Year 1 students in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) participated in the annual CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) retreat, where they had the opportunity to take part in activities related to the CAS component of the IB diploma.

The CAS retreat took place over the span of two days, and began with a visit to PUSH Climbing, where students engaged their teamwork, perseverance and physical endurance by taking part in a friendly climbing competition

In the morning of the second day, the students visited Vinspace Art Studio and spent time developing their creative abilities through a drawing and wireframe sculpture workshop

In the afternoon, the focus shifted from creativity to service with a visit to Dieu Giac Orphanage. Here, students had the opportunity to plan and execute service-based activities for orphaned children, which included English activities and games. In addition, donations of toiletries, non-perishable food, and household cleaning items were presented to the orphanage.

Over the two-year course of the IBDP, candidates are required to take part in CAS experiences and projects to successfully complete the diploma. Students pursue activities in three strands: Creativity, which encourages students to create or perform in an artistic way; Activity, which focuses on physical exertion and healthy lifestyles; and Service, where students must find a way to respond to a need in their community.

The CAS retreat is a formal start to the service-learning component of the IB diploma, and is a way for students to reflect and consider other opportunities that they can pursue in order to add to their personal CAS portfolios. The 2018 CAS retreat was an interactive way to get students acquainted with the CAS program, and inspire them to consider their own personal interests that relate to each strand. Best of luck to the Year 1 students in their CAS pursuits!
