Sheryl Freeman

Chair of CISS Leadership Team/ CISS Secondary Principal

Dr, Sheryl is a retired Secondary School Principal from the Toronto District School Board. Prior to her tenure as a secondary school principal, Sheryl worked in Staff Development, Co-operative Education and Service Learning. She has a Bachelors degree in English, a Masters in Educational Administration, a PhD in Theory and Policy Studies from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and her Supervisory Officers papers. Sheryl has been an Ontario Principal Council (OPC)  Instructor for the Principal’s Qualification Program.  In 2013 she was named one of Canada’s 50 Outstanding Principals.  Dr. Sheryl was appointed Leadership Chair for CISS and Secondary Principal of CIS in 2014. 

Andreas Ghabrial

CIS Elementary Principal

Mr. Andreas is an Elementary Principal on leave from the Toronto District School Board. Mr. Andreas was born in Stuttgart, Germany. His mom is German and his dad is Egyptian.  His first language is German. As a young boy his family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia where Andreas grew up to be an avid outdoorsman. Before his career in teaching, Andreas worked as a land surveyor for Kananaskis Highway in preparation for the Calgary Olympics and as prospector for a mining company in British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Nevada and Oregon. He later went on to study Geography at McGill University in Montreal. Mr. Andreas has worked as an Instructional Leader in History, Geography and Social Studies and in Information and Communication Technology. Andreas has specialist qualifications in Special Education and Geography. He joins CISS as the CIS Elementary Principal in August, 2016.

Andrew Lin

CIS Secondary Vice-Principal/ IB Co-ordinator

Mr. Andrew has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and is currently undertaking courses towards a Masters in Educational Leadership and Policy. He has specialist qualifications in both Chemistry and Mathematics.  Mr. Andrew is an IB Chemistry teacher with teaching experience in Toronto and in Munich, Germany. Prior to joining the CIS Leadership Team as Secondary Vice-Principal and IB DP Coordinator, Andrew was the IB DP Coordinator at Parkdale Collegiate Institute in the Toronto District School Board.

Mr. Andrew has recently been selected as a member of the IB Asia-Pacific IB Educator Network, for the positions of Workshop Leader and School Visit Team Member. Since last year, he has served as the Chair of the IB VLMC Region DP Network.

Steve Steers

CIS Elementary Vice-Principal

Mr. Steve is on leave from the Toronto District School Board where he was the Vice-Principal of Valley Park Middle School - a large school of 1,000 students in Grades 6,  7 and 8 representing over twenty countries and languages. Mr. Steve has an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a major in English Language and Literature. He has specialist qualifications in Reading and English. Steve began his teaching career in Japan where he taught for three years. Before he left the classroom to become a school administrator, Steve worked across the City of Toronto as an Instructional Leader supporting teacher practice and student achievement in Mathematics. In his role as CIS Vice-Principal, Steve is working with all our teachers to develop students’ numeracy skills. 

Bonnie Thibodeau

BCIS Principal

Ms Bonnie is from the Ottawa Valley. She comes from a family of educators; her Dad was an Elementary Principal. Ms Bonnie has an undergraduate degree from Carleton University and a Masters of Education from the University of Ottawa. She has been Principal of both Elementary and Intermediate schools in the Upper Canada District School Board and an instructor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Education. In addition to her Principal Qualifications, she also has her Supervisory Officer’s papers. After some initial work in China, Ms Bonnie was CIS Vietnam’s first principal in 2009!  She went on to become Principal at the Canadian International School in Cairo and then to Panama.  Bonnie returned as the Principal of our Bilingual Canadian International School, BCIS where she is working with students and both Canadian and Vietnamese teachers to develop a program that satisfies Vietnamese diploma requirements and challenges students’ English language facility. 

Shannon-Lee Kelly

BCIS Vice-Principal

Ms. Shannon-Lee is a retired Elementary Principal from the Thames Valley  District School Board in London, Ontario. She has teaching qualifications in the Primary, Junior and Intermediate Divisions. She completed a two year internship in Family Mediation with a Collaborative Law Firm, and taught the Alternative Dispute Resolution Certificate Program through the University of Western Ontario. In addition to her Masters of Education, Ms. Shannon- Lee has specialist qualifications in Special Education , English as a Second Language, and Primary Education. Ms. Shannon-Lee joined the CISS Leadership Team as the BCIS Vice-Principal in August 2015. Under her leadership the BCIS Elementary Staff is working to develop differentiated programs to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. 

Quynh Tran

BCIS Elementary Vice-Principal

After high school in Phan Thiet, Ms Quynh attended the University of Pedagogy in Ho Chi Minh City where she specialized in Primary Education, Grades 1 – 5.  She began teaching in a private Vietnamese school in HCMC.  In 2007, Ms Quynh won the second place award from the District 1 DoeT in recognition of her Excellence in Teaching .  Ms Quynh first joined CISS as a Vietnamese teacher at CIS in 2010. Since then she has been a primary teacher at the Bilingual Canadian International School (BCIS). In 2015 she was appointed as the Elementary Vice-Principal working with Ms Shannon-Lee. This year she has attended Saigon University to complete her certificate in Educational  Management. Ms Quynh enjoys her placement in both the classroom with her students and working with her colleagues through the administrative office.

Hang Tran

CVK Principal

Ms Hang comes from a family of educators; her Mom was a Kindergarten teacher. Early in her life, Ms Hang chose to follow her mother’s footsteps. After high school she enrolled in the Early Education Program at Hanoi National University of Education and graduated with her Bachelor of Education. Before her appointment as the first Principal of the Canada-Vietnam Kindergarten (CVK), Ms Hang had over six years experience working in international schools in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Ms Hang also holds a Certificate in Educational Management from the Vietnam National College of Education in HCMC. Ms Hang continues her professional learning through her vast network of colleagues. Currently she is studying with Dr. Ha Vinh Tho’s  programs related to Gross National Happiness and Compassionate Leadership. AT CVK she has hosted a variety of programs for parents focussed on early childhood development, notably children’s health and well being, and learning through play. 

Thi Nguyen

CVK Vice Principal

Ms Thi attended the University of Pedagogy in Ho Chi Minh City and specialized in Kindergarten Education. After graduation she taught kindergarten in public school in HCMC, District 5, and then at other international schools in HCMC before she joined CIS as an Elementary Vietnamese teacher. She has won many awards from the DoeT and MoEt for her commitment to students and Excellence in Teaching. In 2012 she was appointed as Vice Principal at the Canada-Vietnam Kindergarten (CVK) working with Ms Hang.  Ms Thi also holds a Certificate in Educational Management from the Vietnam National College of Education in HCMC. Ms Thi loves best her work with the children. Her radiant smile and ever present sense of humour permeates the building.
