Making Learning Visible Kindergarten at CIS

In Kindergarten at CIS, play is when we do our best learning. Using iPads helps Kindergarten teachers and students to look at, talk about and understand the learning that is happening. Young students show learning in so many different ways so having tools that help teachers and students capture it is so helpful. It is our job as Kindergarten teachers to make this learning visible and share how it is connected to the development of our students.

This year we have been using a new iPad app called Seesaw. This app is a tool that helps students share their hard work in pictures, videos, notes or drawings all by themselves! Using Seesaw has helped our students look at their play in a new way. When they finish something that they are working on, they find an iPad and use Seesaw to add it to their portfolio. A Portfolio is a collection of different activities and work pieces that the students and teachers are proud of. Once the work is in the Portfolio, our student’s families can see all of the learning that we are doing inside our classroom. The families have felt really excited about this because they love to see how their child is growing at CIS. They enjoy looking at all of their child's work with them at the end of the day.

During the day we also use the iPads to access helpful apps. One tool is a reading program called Reading A-Z that help students practice their reading at CIS. We are also exploring Teach My Monster How to Read, Duck Duck Moose Reading, Epic and QR codes. Our new iPads have given us a chance to integrate more technology in our teaching and to give our students an opportunity to see how valuable it is as a learning tool.
